About this event

Join Shelter for the epic challenge of an open water swim (with water temperature expected to be around 18°C. Enjoy all the benefits of cold water swimming (including boosting your immune system, improving circulation, reducing those aches and pains and improving your mental health), whilst supporting Shelter in the Fight for home.

Every participant will receive their very own Shelter branded swim hat to wear on the day.

Join us for a fun day out and bring colleagues, family and friends along to take part with you or cheer you on from dry land. Children over the age of 8 can join us in the water for a fun family activity. The Lakeside Cafe will be open selling refreshments and we'll have a raffle full of fantastic prizes to try your luck.

Home is a human right. It's our foundation and it's where we thrive. Yet, every day millions of people are being devastated by the housing emergency. We exist to defend the right to a safe home. Because home is everything. Your fundraising will help ensure we are there for those facing homelessness.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a wetsuit?

You can choose to wear normal swimwear or a wetsuit. Wetsuits are available to hire if needed (we recommend booking this in advance). We don't recommend using sports/kayaking/wind-surf wetsuits as these aren't designed for swimming

Do I need to be experienced in open water swimming?

Nope, this event is suitable for first timers or regular wild swimmers. If you are not used to the cold water we recommend just taking a short dip to ensure you don't get too cold.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

Eat well and stay hydrated before the swim.

What do I need to bring?

Swimming costume or wetsuit, towel, warm clothes to change into, a warm drink and some food (or purchase at the café), and a bag to put your wet stuff in afterwards.

How do I get sponsored?

The easiest way to collect sponsorship is by setting up a JustGiving page - https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/shelter-open-water-swim. You can also use sponsor forms if you prefer - https://england.shelter.org.uk/support_us/events/resources
