The smallsword is a lightweight, one-handed thrusting weapon that rose to prominence in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed primarily for civilian use, it evolved as a duelling weapon and as a symbol of status, replacing the heavier rapier as fencing styles shifted toward speed and precision over power and reach.
The smallsword represents the refinement of European swordplay, embodying both martial utility and the elegance of its time. Its influence can still be seen in modern sport fencing, particularly in the foil, which evolved directly from smallsword practice.
From the 27th of April 2025, we are hosting a 6-week introductory course on the use of the smallsword. This course is an ideal introduction to HEMA and Historical fencing. Focusing on the works of Domenico Angelo from the late 18th century, the system taught is both elegant and effective.
The course runs in the main hall of the Southside community centre on Sundays from 3-4 pm. The cost for the course is either £50 for the entire six-week course or £15 per session
