As the cold northerly winds finally disappear, Spring leaps into action and, as if by magic, flowers appear in abundance, leaves push their way into the world, the birds clamour to be heard and insects take to the wing. This walk will take in some nature-rich spots near to the centre of Penicuik to observe and marvel at this great awakening.

We will meet at the Town Hall and leave at 1pm, walking down to the Valleyfield Estate by the River North Esk. We will cross the river and visit one of the ponds that feed into the river to witness the aquatic world. We will walk from there along the east side of the river to a footbridge where we will join the large path on the west bank of the North Esk. There will be lots to see, hear, touch and smell in the woods alongside the river. We will return to the town centre by a footpath off the woods.

Families and individuals are welcome.

Footware and Clothing: As it can be muddy underfoot, depending on the weather, we advise wearing walking boots and water-proof jackets. Gloves and hats are advised if it is a cold day.

Terrain and difficulty: We will be walking on tarmac, gravelled or otherwise surfaced walkways. The gradient will mostly be level to a gentle incline. There is one stretch of slightly steeper path towards the end of the walk.

As places are limited please only sign up if you know you will be able to attend. If you find out at a later date that you cannot attend it is very important that you cancel your place on Eventbrite or email CLL@midlothian.gov.uk to let us know then we can pass the place on to someone on the waiting list.
