About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

In this interactive workshop, Caroline Hickman and Elouise Mayall, experienced in supporting young people’s mental health in relation to climate change, will explore how adults (educators, parents, and others working with children and young people) can provide meaningful support to help youth navigate the challenges of climate anxiety. They will be joined by members of CPA’s Student and Young People group who will share their experiences and be on hand to answer attendee questions.

This session will provide valuable insights into understanding the unique needs of young people in relation to climate change and practical strategies to help foster resilience. It’s a must-attend for anyone working closely with young people who is keen to better support their emotional and psychological well-being in the face of the climate crisis.

Climate Breakdown and Child Safeguarding: Understanding the climate crisis as a child’s rights and mental health crisis

Children today are growing up in a global climate and ecological crisis, with flooding and wildfires increasing in frequency and intensity. It’s not surprising that anxiety relating to climate change is on the rise: over 75% of primary school children surveyed in 2023 said that they are worried or extremely worried about the climate crisis (YouGov survey for Greenpeace): and a 2021 survey of 10,000 children and young people found that 75% thought the future was frightening (Hickman et al, 2021).

Aims of the Session:

  • To deepen understanding of how climate change impacts children and young people.
  • To provide guidance on supporting young people’s mental health during climate-related stress.
  • To empower adults with tools and strategies for helping youth live with the strong emotions that come with connecting with the climate crisis.

Who Should Attend:
This event is tailored for professionals, educators, parents, caregivers, and anyone supporting young people in facing the emotional challenges of the climate crisis. Young people with an interest in climate psychology are also particularly encouraged to attend.

Ticket Information:

  • Free for young people (16 to 25 years) and Climate Psychology Alliance (CPA) members.
  • £15 for general attendees.
