Teaching Climate Change Literacy through Geography

By Twinkl TeachMeet
Online event

Overview

Join us as we discuss climate change literacy and eco-anxiety, and consider ways to address these through our geography teaching.

This TeachMeet is designed to build confidence and clarity in teaching climate change within the primary age range, empowering you, as educators, with both strong subject knowledge and practical classroom strategies. Develop a clear and age-appropriate understanding of climate change, briefly exploring the science behind it, its causes and impacts, and how these concepts can be meaningfully translated for young learners.

Crucially, we will also address the importance of teaching accurate climate content to avoid spreading misinformation, providing you with strategies to support children in evaluating sources and identifying accurate examples while being aware of digital misinformation and what to look out for.

A key focus is supporting wellbeing. As awareness of climate issues grows, many children and teachers experience eco-anxiety. We will explore effective, sensitive strategies to recognise and address these feelings, specifically highlighting how engaging in meaningful climate action can serve as a powerful antidote to worry. This approach helps to foster hope, resilience, and a sense of agency rather than fear. You will gain tools to create a supportive learning environment where difficult topics can be discussed openly and constructively.

We will also share a range of practical ideas for integrating climate change into primary geography lessons, exploring engaging teaching approaches, including enquiry-based learning, local and global case studies, and hands-on fieldwork opportunities that bring learning to life.

The TeachMeet will also highlight meaningful cross-curricular links, showing how climate change can be woven through subjects such as science, literacy, maths, design, computing, and citizenship.

Feel equipped and inspired to embed climate change education confidently and effectively across the curriculum, helping children develop understanding, empathy, and the skills needed to engage positively and proactively with the world around them.
