About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours 30 minutes

On the face of it, a negotiation is more about balancing competing interests than it is about persuading others that you're right, but the horse-trading can't begin until the other side is convinced your position is credible and reasonable - and that's where your powers of persuasion will make all the difference.

Head Coach Tony Koutsoumbos, a negotiator, debate coach, and Model United Nations veteran (which has proved far more useful in later life than he expected) will take you through how to use a suite of debate skills to:

  • set the agenda of a negotiation
  • build narratives that enhance your credibility
  • challenge arguments designed to undermine you

You will also learn by doing through a simulated negotiation in which you will have to work with others to secure collective agreement while achieving your own unique objective.

Tony is the former Director and founder of the UK's first professional debate training programme and membership organisation, the Great Debaters Club. Organised by

At Debate London we train you to speak in public, think strategically, and deal with conflict. We offer members regular opportunities to participate in our monthly, free-to-attend debates, that are open to all!

Our events tend to fall under 2 categories:

  • Public Speaking and Debate Training workshops, where we train our members to defend arguments in their own words by develop a range of skills
  • Free-to-attend Public debates, where every 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month we debate the issues dividing public opinion. This year topics ranged from NATO membership for Ukraine, to deposing Boris Johnson, falling UK birth rates - and fake news. Topics are expressed not as a question, but as a proposal, that the audience must vote to accept or reject after hearing all the arguments.
