The Salon welcomes two provocateurs, Jwana Aziz and Sharon Haywood, who will be in conversation about social media and mental health. Come and join the discussion!

Jwana Aziz, a Research Fellow at the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham, is currently investigating the Andrew Tate phenomenon and the societal implications of widespread digitally mediated harm. Her work also involves examining online self-improvement culture, body image, and disordered eating. For the future, she is interested in continuing to apply qualitative methods to explore the connections between digital communication, social dynamics, economic shifts, and political practices in shaping male mental health.

Sharon Haywood, a Research Associate at the Centre for Appearance Research (University of the West of England), has worked on various projects focused on promoting positive body image among children and adolescents, primarily through the development and evaluation of innovative interventions, such as a social media-based fictional video series for adolescent girls and young women in Indonesia and exploring the use of influencers to deliver evidence-based body image interventions to adolescent girls in the UK. She also has extensive experience with size-inclusive activism and facilitating policy change in Argentina and on a global level. Currently, she is leading a mixed-method study with collaborators from the University of Buenos Aires exploring the relationship between clothing size availability and body image and eating disorder behaviours among Argentinian adolescents.

This monthly virtual discussion forum - The Salon - is part of the Mental Health and Medical Humanities Initiative, instigated by the Institute for Mental Health, but owned by scholars across the university. Speakers act as ‘provocateurs’, offering brief 5-minute presentations that might be rooted in a reading, a piece of art, or a key theme from their research. The Salon aims to recreate stimulating, interdisciplinary discussions, which maximise ideas and collaborations and slot into hectic schedules.
