Join Stephen Thompson at an evening celebrating the life and achievements of Thomas Blake Glover. Stephen will deliver an informative presentation about Glover and lead a discussion following.
Thomas Blake Glover, the so-called Scottish Samurai, was born in Fraserburgh in 1838 to Mary Findlay and Thomas Berry Glover, a coastguard officer. After being educated in Aberdeen and spending a few years working with his older brother Charles as a trainee shipbroker in Aberdeen, Glover was hired by Jardine Matheson and went to work in Shanghai.
After two years, he moved to Nagasaki in Japan as a trader, just as the country was starting to open up to world trade. After befriending many of the Samurai clans, he gained favour with his support to overthrow the Shogunate government which led to the Meiji Restoration (Founding Imperial Japan with a new young emperor).
Glover aided and abetted the formation and subsequent success of Mitsubishi, where he was employed until his death in 2011.Glover is known as one of the fathers of modern Japan.
