Hockerton Housing Project is a community of sustainable homes that have been lived in for over 25 years. The earth-sheltered sustainable homes are built with high thermal mass and very high levels of insulation which amazingly eliminates the need for whole house heating systems. Residents of the five houses generate their own clean electrical energy to meet their remaining energy needs. We also grow most of their own food, harvest and treat our own water and recycle waste materials. Hopefully an inspiring example on the path to a zero carbon world.
The tour will be led by a resident of the project to give you a personal view on what it’s like to live in this sustainable co-housing project, which is now in its 25th year.
This tour includes a guided walk around the site to learn about our food, water and renewable energy systems, a tour of one of the homes, and a talk on the challenges faced during the build, and subsequent development, of the project.
It is a chance for those wanting to find out more about sustainability in the home and how it can work for local communities.
Find out more about the project by reading our Knowledge Bank article with Deb Yates, one of the members of the community. Read it here.
