Treating Jealousy

What is this webinar about?

Jealousy is a powerful emotion which can impact on relationships, career, family and other areas of everyday life. It can trigger and maintain depressive, anxious and angry perspectives on the world and the people around us.

In this workshop we will look at the phenomenon of jealousy and the underlying psychological dynamics with a particular focus on adult romantic relationships.

Consideration will be given to the full range of jealousy phenomena from everyday desire to morbid jealousy, pathological jealousy, and conjugal paranoia as part of the so-called Othello Syndrome or 'Delusional Disorder Jealous Type' (DDJT).

Drawing on the work of Leahy, the workshop will consider the differences between Jealousy and Envy. Envy is a common social emotion frequently linked to depression, hostility and shame. Unlike jealousy which involves the fear or anger that a primary relationship is threatened by a third party, according to Leahy, envy by contrast relates to a focus on threats to status such that another person’s “gain” is viewed as a “loss” for the self.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop delegates should have achieved the following:

Understand Jealousy and Its Consequences:

  • By the end of the course, participants should be able to define jealousy, identify its impact on various life domains, and recognize its potential to trigger depressive, anxious, and angry perspectives.

Distinguish Between Jealousy and Envy:

  • Participants will learn to differentiate between jealousy and envy, understanding the underlying emotional dynamics and their distinct effects on mental well-being and behavior.

Recognize Different Types of Jealousy:

  • At the end of the course, participants should be able to identify and differentiate between various types of jealousy, from everyday desire to pathological jealousy and conjugal paranoia, such as the 'Delusional Disorder Jealous Type' (DDJT).

Apply CBT Techniques for Jealousy Management:

  • Participants will learn how to apply Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques to identify and challenge automatic negative thoughts associated with jealousy, and practice cognitive restructuring to modify these thought patterns.

Help Clients Develop Healthy Coping Strategies and Strengthening Relationships:

  • By the end of the course, participants should be able to develop healthy coping strategies to manage jealousy effectively, enhance communication and trust in romantic relationships, and foster self-esteem and emotional resilience in the context of jealousy
