About this event

Schools are invited to join us (free of charge) online for a very special virtual event to mark the 80th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War with award-winning author Jenny Pearson as she presents her new book Shrapnel Boys, an explosive historical adventure about the friendship and courage of a group of young boys living through the Second World War.

Suitable for KS2 or 7-11 years

“Like Robert Westall's The Machine Gunners, Jenny Pearson puts her band of brave, spirited kids in the middle of their very own war”
Phil Earle, British Book Award-winning author of When the Sky Falls

As part of this 45-minute interactive schools’ event students will discover the real-life experiences that inspired Jenny’s story about 11-year-old Ronnie Smith whose life is full of battles. On the streets, in the sky, at school, at home. Learn what it would have been like to be a kid during the war, doing normal things like going to school, having fun with friends and looking out for your little brother. And hear some mind-boggling facts and figures from this period of history.

Schools will also have the chance to put questions to Jenny during this special event.

Jenny Pearson is the Laugh Out Loud Book Award-winning author of The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates, The Incredible Record Smashers, Grandpa Frank’s Great Big Bucket List, The Boy Who Made Monsters and Operation Nativity.

Waterstones Virtual Author Visits are the perfect opportunity to encourage reading for pleasure, introducing children to new books as well as fabulous author & illustrators, and to help inspire a love of reading even in the most reluctant readers. Taking part will support children’s literacy, creative writing and encourage a love of reading for pleasure.

Taking place on Zoom, this 45-minture webinar session will include a live presentation from the author, giving students the chance to hear about the authors book, career and experiences. There will also be a chance for children to have their questions answered live during the event!

Often pupils are very inspired to read the author’s book after the event, so we have created a special discount on Shrapnel Boys, for school account orders. Schools can save 30% on single copy or a class set by contacting accountsalesinfo@waterstones.com. Copies of the book can also be purchased at £6.50 (RRP £7.99 – incl. P&P) using the link below between now and the event on Wednesday 7th May.

Once you register with your email address, you’ll be sent a Zoom link to the webinar.
