The hugely admired VOCES8 Scholars join forces with VOCES8 for a concert of three remarkable a cappella works, conducted by Barnaby Smith: the Missa Papae Marcelli by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Miserere by Sir James MacMillan and the world premiere of Peter Gritton’s Requiem.
In celebration of the 500th anniversary of Palestrina’s birth, his majestic Missa Papae Marcelli, hailed as one of the finest polyphonic masterpieces of the Renaissance, will be sung. Peter Gritton’s deeply personal Requiem, composed in memory of his younger sister Lucy, gives way to MacMillan’s Miserere, inspired by the spirit of Allegri’s iconic setting and a tour-de-force of choral writing, blending plainchant and polyphony.
The concert will open with a selection of works performed by the 2024-25 VOCES8 Scholars (the programme will be available shortly).
This concert will be filmed for future broadcast.
