Non-Fatal Strangulation
Presented by Professor Catherine White, OBE
Medical Director, Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS)
Sexual Offence Medicine Lead, Faculty of Forensic & Legal Medicine

Join us for a free, expert-led webinar exploring the critical topic of non-fatal strangulation, a dangerous, potentially fatal, and often overlooked form of abuse. This session will be delivered by Professor Cath White, Medical Director of the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS) and a nationally recognised leader in forensic and sexual offence medicine. Her influential research helped drive the legislative change criminalising non-fatal strangulation in the UK.

Professor White previously served as Clinical Director of St Mary’s SARC in Manchester and was awarded an OBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours List for her services to vulnerable people.

What to Expect

This session will provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of non-fatal strangulation, including:

  • Background and prevalence
  • The legal framework
  • Taking a clinical history
  • Examination and red flags
  • Management and referral pathways

Why Attend?

Non-fatal strangulation is a pervasive form of abuse that can result in serious physical and psychological harm, including traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicide. Survivors often describe the experience as similar to waterboarding – a terrifying sensation of drowning and near-death. Yet, signs may be subtle and easily missed without appropriate training.

This session is particularly important for healthcare professionals working in police custody and sexual assault referral centres (SARCs), where early recognition and documentation can be crucial.

Please note:
This webinar will be recorded. By registering and joining, you agree to the session being recorded. The recording will be made available to UKAFNP members only via the members’ area of our website for a time-limited period.
