About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Magical mysterious swifts spend just three or four months with us in London in the summer. This tiny, speedy, acrobatic bird arrives in the capital in April/May, having travelled breathtakingly spectacular distances from Zimbabwe, Congo and Mozambique.

It's fun just to watch them fly very, very fast - they almost never land, eating drinking, sleeping, preening and mating on the wing! But swifts are in danger. There are less and less of the old-fashioned buildings they like to nest in and less and less insects for them to eat. That's where we can help!

Join us this May half term to make a 'swift brick' which you can then take home (or to any suitable place) to provide a possible home for a family of swifts this summer! I don’t think swifts can read but as well as the brick we will make a welcome plaque out of clay for you to hang up with it. In the process we will learn clay writing techniques and how to say 'welcome' 'home sweet home' or whatever you like in the language of the country the birds are arriving from!!

The workshop is suitable for children aged six and over. Children under 10 need an adult to stay with them.

£7 per child, accompanying adults don’t need a ticket.
