Introduction
The Humber Estuary is a highly designated site for nature, with a fifth of England’s land area draining into it and supporting one of the busiest trading areas in Europe, delivering majorly to the UK economy.
A myriad of wildlife and supporting habitats provide many ecosystem services to the communities living alongside this mighty estuary. Historic uses and current practices have had a negative impact on some of the species and services in the estuary, which Wilder Humber is trying to address through trialing various nature recovery techniques.
Wilder Humber is a five-year pilot programme to restore marine habitats and species via a pioneering partnership between, the renewable energy leader, Ørsted, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
As part of this programme, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, has been building a new facility at Saltfleetby to enable seed banking and plant propagation of species associated with saltmarsh and sand dune habitats. The design has been informed by site visits kindly hosted by a number of private nurseries and the National Network of Seed Banks and Plant Propagation of Wildlife Trusts with Kew Millennium Seed Bank, which Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust initiated in 2021.
The aim is to make this a hub of excellence, where professional and trained volunteers can experience working alongside internationally renown and locally respected ecologists, seed bankers and researchers.
We are now nearing the completion of the set up at Saltfleetby, and feel the time is right to launch the site, and celebrate this milestone in the Wilder Humber programme of work.
We therefore invite you to be part of this celebration.
Event details
We will host the celebration event over the evening of the 14th May with a reception dinner and presentations at the iconic Grimsby Town Football Club, aptly nicknamed The Mariners. This will be followed by a return coach journey from Grimsby to Saltfleetby the following day on 15th May to visit the nursery and seed bank followed by a BBQ lunch. We aim to have people back to Grimsby by 14.00-15.00.
