About this event

Join us for a stunning walk through the picturesque village of Abbotsbury, following the Hardy Way as it winds through rolling countryside and along the iconic Chesil Beach. Along the way, we’ll take in breathtaking coastal views before making our way up to the historic St. Catherine’s Chapel, a peaceful hilltop retreat with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape.

Route Overview

  • Starting Point: Abbotsbury Car Park
  • Distance: 10km / 6 miles
  • Time: 4-5 hours
  • Ascent: 290m
  • Grade: Intermediate (Find out more about our grading system here)
  • Terrain: Pebbly beaches, muddy footpaths, gravel tracks, crop fields, and country lanes.

What to Expect

We'll start our journey in the historic village of Abbotsbury, gradually making our way uphill. As we ascend, we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of St Catherine’s Chapel, the sweeping expanse of Chesil Beach, and, on a clear day, the distant silhouette of Portland.

From there, we’ll follow the ancient South Dorset Ridgeway, a route walked for thousands of years, before descending towards Chesil Beach. We’ll take time to experience this striking stretch of coastline before making our way back uphill to visit St Catherine’s Chapel. After exploring the chapel and soaking in the panoramic views, we’ll descend once more into Abbotsbury, where we can round off the walk with a well-earned drink at a café or pub.

Our hikes are designed to be enjoyable and relaxed – it’s about experiencing nature, not rushing! However, you are responsible for your own health and safety. If you're unsure about your fitness level, consult your doctor or reach out with any concerns.

I am a Qualified Mountain Leader and Level 3 Outdoor First Aid trained, so I’ll be available in case of emergencies.

Toilets are available at the start and mid-point of the hike. Otherwise, be prepared for a ‘wild wee’ if needed – just let someone know and find a private spot.
