Welcome to Woodland Writer’s Studio!

Date: 12th June 2025

Location: Royal Holloway

Join ecopoet and lecturer Dr Briony Hughes on a creative journey through Royal Holloway’s Living Campus. This guided nature work and writing workshop invites you to explore the university’s woodland, meadows, and watercourses though the mediums of poetry and art.

We will engage in unique and hands-on writing exercises whilst paying close attention to the textures of plant species, the rhythms of birdsong, and the movements of invertebrates and freshwater systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is this event fully accessible?

While some woodland paths include uneven surfaces, steps, and slopes, alternative accessible routes are available. Please contact us at least 48 hours before the event if you have mobility or other support needs so we can plan accordingly.

How long is the walk?

Approximately 1.25 km, depending on route taken.

What should I bring?

Notebook and pen/pencil – for jotting down thoughts, reflections, and responses to writing activities. Camera or smartphone – optional, but you might enjoy capturing the scenery. Water bottle – there are refill stations on campus, though not in the outdoor areas.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain, including steps and gentle slopes. For sun, sunscreen, a hat, and light, breathable clothing and in case of rain a waterproof jacket. As we’ll visit the campus meadow, long sleeves and trousers are advised to reduce the risk of ticks.
