About this event

Calling young writers and artists! Or those who’d just like to give it a go.

Spark your creativity with this series of workshops in an exciting partnership between the Highland Folk Museum and Storylands Sessions.

Each month, we will gather at the Museum’s Am Fasgadh building to be inspired by unique objects in the Museum’s collection. Spooky huts, old shinty sticks, funny costumes and so much more. These will be springboards for your imagination and you can travel wherever it takes you, writing poetry, stories, drama or comedy!

The workshops are offered to anyone aged 13-18 - no writing experience needed.

Visual artists are also welcome to come and sketch or paint. Please book in the normal way and bring your own materials.

This will be a relaxed, fun and welcoming workshop for anyone to join.

The workshops take place on the first Tuesday of every month starting 4th of February (except July) from 5-6pm. You can come to as many or as few as you like, but there is a discount for a block booking.

PLEASE NOTE: Some workshops involve walking to a location in the wider museum so all participants must be ready to depart AT AM FASGADH by 5pm. We suggest arriving 10 minutes early. Likewise, it is essential that guardians arrive for pick-up NO LATER than 6pm. Storylands Sessions and HFM staff cannot wait with young people beyond this time as another workshop follows soon after.

Bring paper or notebook, pencils or pens, a playful spirit AND outdoor clothing.

These workshops are mainly led by Sessions co-host and local author, Merryn Glover. Merryn's books, Of Stone and Sky and The Hidden Fires: A Cairngorms Journey with Nan Shepherd are set in Badenoch, Speyside and the Cairngorms. Her first novel, A House Called Askival, is set in India, where she grew up. She has also written plays and short stories for BBC Radio and is a regular contributor to the Guardian Country Diary. AND she is a qualified English and drama teacher who has led workshops for young people for over 30 years.

Other workshop leaders will be Karen Hodgson Pryce, Andrea Turner and Barbara Henderson.

The Highland Folk Museum, run by Highlife Highland, is mainland Britain’s first open-air museum. Workshops will take place both inside and out and about when the weather is fine.

"I just wanted to say that my daughter came home buzzing yesterday after your session. Last night she was feeling so inspired and talking about how she's going to start writing again! So thank you!!"

"I really enjoyed the style of poems we got to write."

The Am Fasgadh building (which means 'Shelter' in Gaelic) is at the north end of the Highland Folk Museum with it's own separate entrance from the road, including some parking. It is fully accessible and the main door is directly opposite the carpark. Please do not use the main carpark at the south end of the museum site, as it will be locked by the time our workshop finishes. Driving directions are here.

The Storylands Sessions are a series of music and storytelling events in Badenoch venues.

Hosted by musician, Hamish Napier, and writer, Merryn Glover, The Sessions are a celebration of Highland culture and community, both traditional and contemporary. We welcome locals and visitors alike, classic material and original creations, and we love the buzz when they come together.
