Aims:

To revisit existing strategies and introduce potential future developments in the imaging evaluation of mandibular third molars.

Objectives:

At the end of this study session, and after a period of reflection and self-directed study, delegates should be able to:

· Recognise scenarios where the additional radiation dose of Cone Beam CT might be justified in the evaluation of mandibular third molars

· Identify features associated with a high risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury on imaging

· Identify additional imaging features relating to mandibular third molars which might influence the shared decision making process

· Appreciate the limitations of Cone Beam CT evaluation of the mandibular third molar

· Describe potential future developments in imaging for assessing mandibular third molars.

GDC Development Outcomes: This CPD course meets the criteria for the GDC’s development outcome(s): A and C.

Consultant Dental and Maxillofacial Radiologist,

Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust

Ed’s main professional interests include dental cross-sectional imaging and innovation in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, with a particular focus on the role of radiology in three-dimensional and patient pathway planning. Ed also has a role in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds Dental Institute, and active inter-disciplinary research interests.
