Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Training:
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to support young people who may be experiencing mental health challenges.
This programme is particularly valuable for teachers, parents, youth workers, and anyone who regularly interacts with young people.
The primary purpose of YMHFA is to help participants:
- Understand adolescent development and mental health difficulties
- Recognize the signs of mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, self-injury, eating disorders, psychosis
- Respond effectively and with confidence when a young person is struggling, ensuring they signpost them to the right support at the right time.
- Reduce stigma and promote open conversations about mental health, fostering a culture where young people feel safe to seek help.
- Encourage early intervention and professional support, improving long-term mental health outcomes for young individuals. We will explore what professional support is available.
By taking part in YMHFA training, participants become key allies in safeguarding youth well-being.
This programme helps build supportive communities where young people feel heard, understood, and empowered to manage their mental health challenges.
Why do we need to approach Youth Mental Health First Aid differently to other groups of people?
- There is a high prevalence of mental health difficulties amongst young people. Higher than any other group in society.
- Stigma and self-stigma have a bigger effect on younger people
- Lack of knowledge about mental health
- Lack of knowledge about sources of support
- There is a reluctance to seek help. Too many young people think ‘this is just the way I am’
- Adults have an important influence in young people’s lives
- Mental Health problems interfere with development.
NOTE
Promotion of good mental health is not the same as treating mental health problems. This is not designed as a prevention programme, nor is it intended to promote good mental health. It can only be one part of the puzzle.
As with any first aid role, a Youth Mental Health First Aider could respond in a crisis or support someone in difficulty but would not be expected to resolve, diagnose, prescribe or have an ‘expert’ opinion on the mental health of the young person.
The principle role of a Youth Mental Health First Aider is to keep someone safe for now and signpost them to the right support.
There are 2 live training days (10am -1pm both days) and 6 online modules to complete, 3 online modules before the first live training day and 3 between the first and second live training days. The online pre-course 3 modules will take approx. 3 hours and you cannot attend the live online training on Day 1 unless these have been completed.
The remaining online modules between the two live training days will take approx. 3 hours and the access codes for these will be shared with you at the live training on day 1.
You will need to have your camera and microphone on for the live training sessions. Please make sure you dial in from a place where you can listen and engage fully.
Once your payment has been received and processed, you will receive access to the training materials and the first 3 online modules.
Your training will be provided by a licenced Youth Mental Health First Aid Wales instructor.
This training event will take place in English. If you would like to make enquiries about future MHFA Wales training in Welsh, please email workshops@rcs-wales.co.uk.
If your organisation would like to arrange in-house Youth Mental Health First Aider training for a group of staff, contact us at workshops@rcs-wales.co.uk and we will organise it with you.
