Northwoods

Northwoods delivers practical support to those involved in the forestry, farming, and timber processing sectors as well as land and woodland owners. Our aim as a Forestry Sector Support Programme is to support stakeholders increase the flow of environmental, social, and economic benefits of trees, woodlands, and forests in a manner resilient to our changing climate.

Working across the wider Northeast and Yorkshire area, Northwoods currently hosts the Northwoods Innovation Programme funded by the Forestry Commission through the Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Funds (WiMFIF), part of the UK Government's Nature for Climate Fund. The Northwoods Innovation Programme has been established to accelerate innovative approaches and technology which improve the number and quality of woodlands in active management. As part of the Innovation Programme, Northwoods organises and hosts a wide range of events, including webinars and in person demonstration events, that communicate innovative ideas and tools to stakeholders that own or are involved in the management of woodlands.

Northwoods can deliver projects with a wide range of forestry and land management objectives. Past projects include the Arb North series of events, which addressed the key issues facing arborists at the time; WoodsWork, a project to bring unmanaged and undermanaged woodland across the north east into environmentally and economically beneficial management; Ignite, the trailblazing training programme for the nascent woodfuel industry which went on to win a National Training Award; and Wildfire – a national annual conference which brought together land managers and fire professionals to discuss and meet the challenges posed by wild land fire.

Northwoods is hosted and core staffed by Reheat, a pioneering renewable heat, forestry, and bioenergy consultancy, who are joined by a consortium of industry experts including Sylva Foundation, RDI Associates, Martin Glynn FICFor, Timber Auctions, and Green Business Finance.
