Clinical Practice
Lorna has worked in primary care for the NHS and with MIND for many years and now has a private clinical practice. Lorna’s clinical work is grounded in the knowledge that mind and body are fully integrated and what the therapist notices in the client’s body, or experiences in her own body, energy, tension, holding or other non-verbal phenomena is vital to bring into awareness and into the therapeutic work with our clients.
Body awareness and knowledge of non-verbal phenomena, the autonomic nervous system and neuroscience are essential to Lorna’s clinical work, in particular paying great attention to the power of the breath, energy and movement in the body.
Lorna’s primary inspiration comes from the legacy of Wilhelm Reich and Laura & Fritz Perls. The contemporary clinical writings and research of Pat Ogden, Nick Totton, Bessel van der Kolk, Robert Shaw, Babette Rothschild, Daniel Stern, Peter Levine, Stephen Porges, Allan Schore and Danielle Siegel inspire Lorna in her work to integrate yoga, the breath and movement into therapy for the treatment of anxiety, depression and trauma.
Yoga Practice
Lorna has been a yoga practitioner since 1999. Due to experiencing the psychological and physical benefits of yoga for herself, Lorna then trained as a yoga teacher and has explored various yoga traditions including Hatha, Iyengar, Scaravelli, Yin and Ashtanga. Lorna continues her yoga training, working with many people in the field of trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive yoga. The research of Bessel van der Kolk clinically validates trauma-sensitive yoga as a treatment for complex trauma and PTSD. This is by far the safest form of yoga Lorna has found to date and has foundations in Trauma Theory, Attachment Theory, Neuroscience and Hatha Yoga with an emphasis on the mindTrauma-Informed-body connection, movement and breathing.
Lorna has worked with many international teachers including Donna Farhi, Shiva Rea, Sarah Powers, Ana Forrest and various other teachers in India, Sri Lanka and America. This enables Lorna to gain insight into the various approaches to Yoga, so they can then be related to her clinical work in a simple, safe and nurturing way.
